Get safe, then call for help
If anyone is hurt, call 911. If the cars can move and it's safe, get out of traffic and turn on your hazards.

Exchange information
Names, phone numbers, driver's license, plate, insurance company and policy number. Hit a parked car? Leave a note with your details.

Photograph everything
Both cars from every side, the damage up close, plates, the street, signs, skid marks and anything that shows what happened.

Know who takes the report
It depends on where it happened — city police, sheriff's deputies or CHP. Look it up for your city in seconds.

File the DMV SR-1 if required
California requires an SR-1 report to the DMV within 10 days if anyone was injured or property damage is over $1,000.

Call your insurer — and choose your shop
Your insurer can't make you use a particular body shop. Tell them your car is going to Top Tier, and we take it from there.
